Underneath the arches!

Here we are the middle hunt of the season already, and the championship table wide open! Due to the holiday season there are only four teams at the start, but they are all keen and ready to go. We have a change of vehicle due to restoration work being carried out on John's motor.

19:30 first transmission and we can hear Simon's dulcet tones to the west of us. We pull out of the car park onto the main road and a quick look in the rear view mirror and it seems every one else has got a good bearing too. Our bearing goes straight through Long Eaton town centre.

19:35. As we reach Forest road we expect the bearings to continue ahead, they do, but are unusually weak for this direction.

19:40 We decide not to bother with Canning Circus and so head down Alfreton Road and cut through to Ilkeston Road heading for Raleigh Island. As we travel along the bearings seem to be swinging more to the south. Hmmmm!

19:45 I have decided that the southerly effect could be a red herring and so its straight on at Raleigh Island, as we pass Woolaton Park the bearings are all over the place. The trees that line the road here are causing lots of Doppler interference and destroying the polar plots.

19:50 Decision time, we are at the junction of Coventry Lane and Trowell Moor. The bearings still 'say' Long Eaton and we decide for speed it would be better to cut back to the A52 at the other end of Coventry lane and get our 'toe down'.

19:55 As we approach Bardhills Island, team G4EKW are ahead of us….we must have wasted too much time somewhere! They have good bearings too and we follow them all the way to Long Eaton Green. We have a bearing putting the fox to the right and so turn into ASDA car park whilst Mike and Geoff turn left…great!

20:00 and we are at the far end of the carpark as Adey comes 'on air'. Directly behind, so its 'about turn' and we circumnavigate the supermarket. Wow! As we emerge from behind the building the signal increases by 30dB!. Bearing at 45 degrees to the left, but where?…. just a bottle bank in this corner of the car park!!

20:05 We are driving round the block looking in all the possible hiding places. The bearings are a little confused due to the built up area. We see Tim G6HRN with a determined look on his face going in the opposite direction.

20:10 We heading back to ASDA where can he be hiding? As we reach the road bridge by the corner of the car park again, the 'penny drops'. "He's under this bridge" we both exclaim. A sharp left turn and we find Simon hiding in one of the arches. G4EKW's team were second and then Tim fielded a resounding third place. Ian G8PWE suffered a minor navigation 'glitch' and was talked in.

G6HRN was picked for fox next time. Don't forget its Simple equipment for the next hunt on August 15th
