More than just a hobby, US Amateur radio also known as ham radio is a way of life for many, and a vital communication network in times of natural or civil disaster.
What’s It All About?
Ham radio operates over set amateur frequencies, originally instigated to keep the US Navy’s ‘official’ frequencies clear. Stereotypically, ham radios are seen as being used by truckers to communicate, but use is much further spread, both by those who use it to keep in touch, and others with a general interest in radio technology.
What Do I Need?
US amateur radio is licensed, with degrees of classification. It is a relatively cheap hobby to start, with local groups operating across the country who can help you get involved.
Is It Useful?
Absolutely! During 911 and Hurricane Katrina, ham radio was used extensively to direct supplies and resources when other communication channels failed.
